“A Change of Affection” by Becket Cook was originally reviewed on my personal Instagram page on August 7th, 2020.
When Becket started showing up in various videos and on social media a few years back, I got a lot of questions about him. I think some of my friends feel I’m their personal expert in LGBTQ+ issues 😊 I don’t read or watch every new resource that comes out on the topic; I just don’t have time for that. But when one of the moms in a ministry support group highly recommended the book, I picked up a copy.

Becket’s story is certainly very compelling! A gay man who works as set designer in Hollywood, he bumps into someone at a coffee shop who invites him to church. The book is part personal story and part Becket’s theology/apologetics concerning biblical sexuality.
It was certainly a good read. I had to laugh when he had a chapter on the Rich Young Ruler. To those who have heard me speak on a Sunday morning, I promise I did not get the idea from him! He kind of went in a different direction anyways. He shared other compelling stories, comparing holding a Christian worldview with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (an analogy I previously heard in a similar form from Christopher Yuan). That’s just one example in addition to the rich young ruler 🙂 I guess great minds think alike!
It was also a relatively easy read. Even the theological sections were accessible for the average person. There was nothing new or particularly groundbreaking in this book for me, but I imagine I read more books on this topic than most!
